German Film Festival 2022

From June 2 - 22, the 2022 German Film Festival (presented by Palace, in association with German Films) showcases the best contemporary German cinema direct from major festivals in Europe plus a selection from its German-speaking neighbours, Austria and Switzerland. Presented by cultural partner the Goethe-Institut, the festival includes the sidebar “Kino for Kids”, a special curated program dedicated to young audiences and families.

The festival opens with A STASI COMEDY (Stasikomödie)
A man’s double life as an underground poet and a Stasi agent in East Berlin in the 1980s comes back to haunt him 30 years later in this comedy starring David Kross and Tom Schilling.

Other festivals highlights include...

THE FORGER (Der Passfälscher)
An illuminating drama that follows the story of Samson “Cioma” Schönhaus, a Jewish graphic artist who hid in plain sight in 1940s Berlin, moving freely about the city using fake documents, while secretly forging IDs to help hundreds of others.

THE LAST EXECUTION (Nahschuss)
Tempted by the offer of a prestigious professorship, ambitious scientist Franz Walter is convinced to work for the GDR’s Stasi in 1981 East Berlin but is soon accused of espionage in this gripping historical drama starring Lars Eidinger.

DEAR THOMAS (Lieber Thomas)
This historical monochrome biopic of East German writer and filmmaker Thomas Brasch, starring Albrecht Schuch, reveals a deeply subversive artist who finds comfort on neither side of the Wall.

CHASING THE LINE (Klammer)
A feel-good biopic that follows legendary Austrian downhill skiing legend Franz Klammer over several days during the 1976 Winter Olympics.

The GOETHE-INSTITUT celebrates its 50th Anniversary in Australia with 5 films from 5 decades

Featuring the 90's classic RUN LOLA RUN (Lola rennt)
When her boyfriend botches up a smuggling payment, Lola has 20 minutes to come up with 100,000 Deutschmarks in this exhilarating thriller set in Berlin and starring Franka Potente.

Other films in the retrospective include THE TIN DRUM, VICTORIA,  GOOD BYE LENIN!
