UK comedian Alice Lowe’s second feature weaves a time bending tale of a woman’s misguided, fatal attraction to the same bad boy across six centuries.
Agnes is hopelessly in love with Alex, the brooding outsider she believes she simply must have, even at the cost of her own life. Ignoring her wise advisor Scipio, the unrequited love of her best friend Meg, and the menacing intentions of the thuggish George, Agnes’ obsession leads her to pay the ultimate price repeatedly - in 1688, 1793, 1847, 1940, 1980, and even 2117. But will this cycle of passion ever end, or are these souls trapped in a never-ending loop of desire?
After co-writing and starring in Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers, and challenging motherhood stereotypes in her 2016 debut Prevenge, Lowe returns to the screen with this darkly comedic exploration of romantic obsession. Featuring a stellar cast including Nick Frost, Tanya Reynolds, Jacob Anderson, and Aneurin Barnard, this feisty film dismantles the glamour of obsession. A triumph of imagination and sharp comedy, offering the meandering brood of an Alain Resnais film fused with the caustic wit of Blackadder.
