Director: Simon Baker
Actors: Elizabeth Debicki, Simon Baker, Richard RoxburghAussie actor Simon Baker makes his feature film directing debut with this screen adaptation of Tim Winton's 2008 novel, Breath. And what a lovely job he does of it.
Breath is a mid 70's rite-of-passage tale about a couple of teenage obsessed surfer dudes, Pikelet (Samson Coulter) and Loonie (Ben Spence) fall under the spell of Sando (Baker), a semi-retired international surf god lying low with his collection of vintage boards.
Along with Sando’s young American wife Eva, they embark on increasingly risky experiences with unimaginable outcomes and effects that will reverberate for many years after.
Breath is so much more than a surf movie, it's a gentle story framed beautifully by the coastal Aussie life style. The characters are being pulled back to the ocean where normal life is extinguished and a life aquatic takes over. Perhaps this is where life's deeper questions exist.
This film works on many levels, it's elegant and nuanced with a lovely rhythm and an unequivocal soul.
