The live-action directing debut of Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3), The Darkest Minds is a teen dystopian drama, adapted from the first book in a series by Alexandra Bracken.

Ruby (Amandla Stenberg) is abducted from home by strangers. The world has gone nuts, gripped by a mysterious disease that has wiped out 98% of the children of the world and bestowed the survivors with super powers.

The government has reacted by herding them into concentration camps where they are assigned a colour representing their particular power. Greens have become instant maths whizzes, blues have telekinesis, oranges have Jedi mind control and reds can shoot fire out of their mouths.

Ruby (an orange), one of the most powerful young people anyone has ever encountered, manages to escape her detention centre and joins a group of runaway kids looking for East River – the only safe haven left for kids.

The characters here are well played, engaging and worth spending time with. And there’s a burgeoning romance at the centre of the film, too.

If you're into teen sci-f'i's like The Hunger Games, Ender’s Game, Divergent and The Maze Runner you'll love this one.
