About the film

Director: Gus Van Sant
Actors: Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Jack Black, Jonah HillThe title of the wrenching addiction drama Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot is a mouthful, but it certainly does evoke the life of the sardonic cartoonist and quadriplegic John Callahan. Joaquin Phoenix (who plays Callahan) is one among the most thrillingly unpredictable film actors alive and his rascally performance steals the show.
Based on the 1989 memoir by Portland, Oregon cartoonist John Callahan, the film traces what happens when this party-hard, skirt-chasing boozehound is rendered a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic by an alcohol-fueled car accident.
His journey from wallowing in despair to successful satirical cartoonist is both funny and grim. It’s his honesty and wicked sense of humour that turn out to be his saving grace, as he makes friends with an oddball AA group, finds that love is not beyond his reach, and develops a talent for drawing irreverent and sometimes shocking cartoons. The drawings of the real-life John Callahan delight in the macabre that he found in everyday life.
Gus Van Sant directs, bringing a distinct sensibility to this impersonal genre just as he did with Milk (2008); the strong supporting cast includes Rooney Mara, Jack Black, Jonah Hill, Udo Kier, Carrie Brownstein, and Kim Gordon. DON'T WORRY, HE WON'T GET FAR ON FOOT finds beauty and comedy in the absurdity of human experience. An absolute “yes”.
