Director: Simon Hunter
Actors: Paul Brannigan, Kevin Guthrie, Sheila Hancock, Amy Manson, Wendy MorganSheila Hancock discovers her inner Bear Grylls in an outdoorsy comedy-drama of late-life adventure Edie.
Edie (Sheila Hancock) has dutifully nursed her husband George for 30 years following a stroke. Now that George has passed on, she wants to fulfill a lifelong wish to climb Mount Suilven in the Scottish Highlands.
After a futile and depressing stay in a rest home, arranged by her daughter, she makes a run for it on a Northbound train from London.
In Inverness she happens upon Jonny, a young man who is curiously driven to help her despite her crankiness.
Thus is forged an unusual bond between the young man and an elderly mountaineer. “I was a wild child, difficult to believe now,” she reminisces. “I used to have such fun… and then I got married.” Yep.
In a stunning performance, octogenarian Shelia Hancock anchors the film effortlessly in a role that is almost tailor made for her. Her ability and range as an actor beautifully conveys both the positive and negative impacts on the path of self-discovery.
