About the film
Release Date: Mar 28, 2019
Director: Jean-Luc GodardThis most recent feature-length foray from one of the great luminaries of the French New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard, won the special Palme d'Or at Cannes 2018 – a new prize awarded for the very first time – with Jury President Cate Blanchett describing him as “continually striving to define and redefine what cinema can be.”
In The Image Book, the 87-year-old Godard demonstrates all the guts and gumption of a filmmaker of half his age, eschewing narrative structure and dramatic performances to present a sound-and-image collage – a work of audio-visual poetry. He lends his own voice to the soundtrack, as he brings a unique artistic perspective to our current zeitgeist, one that feels apocalyptic in its onslaught of hundreds of fragments of things.
You may leave the cinema in a state of inward reflection and rumination evoked through Godard’s striking visual commentary on our contemporary existence. In any case, you’re sure to never look at things in the same way, nor will you want to.
