About the film
Director: Peter Farrelly
Actors: Linda Cardellini, Dimiter D. Marinov, Mahershala Ali, P.J. Byrne, Sebastian Maniscalco, Viggo MortensenThis is an exceptional film.
Set in America’s deep south in the 1960s, 'Green Book' tells the tale of a road trip undertaken by two men; one an uneducated Italian-American hired for his muscle, the other a highly educated African-American pianist.
In his powerful foray into dramatic work as a feature director, Peter Farrelly helms the film, inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line.
Meet Tony Lip – a meatball-sub-lovin’ tough guy and self-proclaimed bullshit artist played by a thoroughly convincing (and more-to-love) Viggo Mortensen. After losing his bouncing job at the Copacabana, Tony lands a gig driving affluent Jamaican-American classical pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali) on a tour through the Deep South. Facing racism and harassment at every turn, the unlikely pair nonetheless manages to keep their sense of humor in the tense and ugly world of segregation.
The performances are powerful and transcendent, so it is no surprise that Mahershala has already secured a Golden Globe for his performance and now an Oscar nomination for each Mahershala and Viggo.
Named best film of the year by the National Board of Review, GREEN BOOK is both a buddy comedy with a heart and a road movie that emphasizes the importance of empathy and connection. That might seem like well-trodden territory, but in the hands of two superbly skilled actors exploring a simple-yet-fascinating story, GREEN BOOK provides serious depth, irresistible warmth, and a wealth of genuinely touching moments.
