About the film
Release Date: Apr 20, 2018
Director: Mike Newell
Actors: Lily James, Jessica Brown Findlay, Matthew GoodeYes, it's a loopy title. And maybe that was expertly planned by the marketing gurus, but gosh this film is good.
The power of the written word does not always transcend so beautifully onto the screen.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a charming story based on the posthumous novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows.
Lily James casts a warm glow as Juliet Ashton, a writer in 1946 London and a rich ensemble cast including Downton Abbey favourites, Jessica Brown Findlay and Penelope Wilton.
With a commission from The Times to write about reading, Juliet decides to visit Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands invaded by the Germans during the war, after receiving a letter from a dishy pig farmer (Michiel Huisman) about the origins of a local book club under the occupation.
Lovingly directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), the characters are delightful.
If you love a 1940's cinched waist, a plucky red lipsticked heroine and a bit of nostalgia, this one's for you.
