Based on the award-winning novel by Lisa Klein, OPHELIA asks us to shift our perspective on Hamlet and tell his tale through the eyes of Ophelia (Daisy Ridley).

So if you haven’t read/seen Shakespeare’s Hamlet, here’s the basics: There was the prince who might be mad, the queen who married her husband’s wicked brother after her husband passed, and probably most iconic of all, the would-be princess who supposedly succumbed to madness herself and drowned, and has been the subject of fervent speculation since.

Was there ever a better time for a retelling of the story from Ophelia’s side? No, now is pretty perfect.

Set in the 14th century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia takes centre stage in the story of her tragic romance with Hamlet (George MacKay) and her relationship with his mother, Queen Gertrude (Naomi Watts).

Full of political unrest, clandestine love and showing a kingdom on the verge of war, Ophelia is a lady-in-waiting who falls for the crown prince, Hamlet. When Hamlet’s father is murdered, however, and his uncle ascends to the throne, rumours and betrayal take hold of the court. All becomes not so fair in either love or war, and Ophelia and Hamlet are forced to both decide and declare where their true loyalties lie. Clive Owen, as usual, is simply wonderful as Claudius.

A wild and motherless child, Ophelia (Daisy Ridley) is taken into Elsinore Castle under the wing of Queen Gertrude and becomes her most trusted lady-in-waiting. Growing into a beautiful and intelligent young woman, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet (George MacKay). While she learns the ways of power and plotting in court, an undeniable love between Ophelia and the Prince blossoms in secret. As war brews with a neighbouring kingdom, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore apart from within – the King has been murdered, driving Prince Hamlet into a downward spiral of vengeful torment.

Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life and devises a plan to escape Elsinore forever, in order to protect a very dangerous secret.
