About the film
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Actors: Penelope Cruz, Antonio BanderasAntonio Banderas (WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN) and Penélope Cruz (ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER) reunite with director Pedro Almodóvar for one of his most acclaimed and personal films, PAIN AND GLORY.
Banderas won Best Actor at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of Salvador Mallo, a filmmaker who suffers from constant back pain, drug problems, and the emotional weight of his mother’s impact on his life. Though he hasn’t made a film in some time, he is reimmersed into his artistic past by the anniversary of one of his most well-known films, opening the door to a whole host of memories that will force him to reevaluate his current path.
Along with Banderas, Cruz gives a stirring performance as Mallo’s mother during his childhood, providing layers of depth and context as we learn more about Mallo. All of this, combined with the palpable sense that this story borders on autobiography for Almodóvar, adds up to one of the most compelling films from one of our best filmmakers.
