Passing

In 1920s New York City, a Black woman (Tessa Thomson) finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend (Ruth Negga) who's passing as white. Rebecca Hall makes her directorial debut with this intimate drama of racial identity which made a splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Adapted from Nella Larsen's eponymous work, published in 1929. In Hall's black-and-white screen version,  Clare (Negga) lives in Manhattan with her white husband who doesn't know that she is Black; Irene (Thompson)  lives in Harlem with her husband, who is a Black doctor, and their two kids. The two women's chance encounter leads to an obsession, resulting in a deeper exploration of racial and gender identity, performance, colourism, and repression.
