Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Actors: Dwayne Johnson, Chin Han, Neve CampbellIn Dwayne Johnson’s latest super-sized action film Skyscraper, Johnson reunites with his Central Intelligence writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber (‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’) for some cheeky, implausibly entertaining, over-the-top thrills and spills that defy physics and common sense. But who wants common sense in their action films?
We just want to see Dwayne Johnson do what he’s been put on this earth to do. Fight bad guys and win.
Set in a fictional imagining of the world’s tallest building, Skyscraper is a shiny, 220-floor behemoth in downtown Hong Kong called “the Pearl.” Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson), a former FBI hostage negotiator turned high-security consultant is there to give the building the thumbs up. But it’s not long after his powerpoint presentation that the architectural phenomenon suddenly goes up in flames. And we do mean skyhigh.
Our anti-gun hero, Sawyer, gets framed for the attack so now he must clear his name and rescue his wife (Neve Campbell) and children who have become trapped inside the building.
Armed with nothing but brute strength and a roll of duct tape, Sawyer pulls himself up 100 or so stories on a construction crane and leaps across a 40-foot chasm to an open window to save his brood from the Sims like towering inferno.
And he does it with a prosthetic leg that serves as both a weapon and sliding door place-holder. Genius.
