About the film
Director: Wim Wenders
Actors: James McAvoy, Alicia VikanderSubmergence, based on a novel by JM Ledgard and directed by Wim Wenders, the German-born director of Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, is a geopolitical thriller and a love story.
At the heart of it all is James (James McAvoy), an MI6 agent who poses as a water engineer to infiltrate an Al-Qaeda enclave in Somalia and Danielle Flinders (the magical Alicia Vikander), a bio-mathematician who’s in the midst of exploring life beneath the sea at its deepest, darkest levels.
A chance encounter on a beach in France leads to an intense and enduring romance and some lovely schmoozing by candlelight.
But, of course, their duties pull them apart just when things are getting interesting.
Both journeys go topside in wholly different ways, as they struggle against both physical threats and their unstoppable emotional needs for each other.
Will this separation will end joyously or in tragedy? Either way, there will probably be tears.
