About the film
This debut feature from Carla Simón, based on her own childhood experiences, is a delicate and moving portrait of a child in the throes of inarticulate grief.
Following the death of her parents from Aids, six-year-old Frida is forced from bustling Barcelona to the sun-dappled Catalan provinces to the home of her young uncle and his wife (David Verdaguer and Bruna Cusí). She also has a new little sister, of whom she must take care, and deal with new feelings such as jealousy.
At the center of every scene is 6-year-old Frida (an arresting Laia Artigas). Cinematographer Santiago Racaj (“Magical Girl”) treats his camera as a living, breathing observer, often viewing the world at Frida’s level . The colors are muted and the style is naturalistic. Through his lens, we see an entirely new family being born.
Entirely deserving of its many awards and rave reviews from critics worldwide, Summer 1993 is a film to see, and see again.
