It tells the true-ish story of Jazz Age sensation Louise Brooks (played with vivacity and verve by Haley Lu Richardson) before she and her severe black bob would take Hollywood by storm.
The year is 1922. The Chaperone picks up just as a young Louise is about to set off for New York City to attend a leading dance school. But of course, her mother will not allow to take the trip without a chaperone. With her sons grown, her sexless marriage going nowhere, and her life a series of monotonous, routine days, society matron Norma Carlisle (Elizabeth McGovern) is all-too-happy to take on the challenge of being Louise’s guardian. It’s hard to determine why Norma is so intent on taking this vivacious stranger to the big city.
The Chaperone is a fascinating, exquisitely made film. One to savor.
