About the film
The timeless love story of a kind – but troubled – man and the brilliant talent he finds, fosters, and fails. A STAR IS BORN has been reimagined by first-time director Bradley Cooper (Jackson Maine) and lead actress Stefani Germanotta, credited by her nom du stage Lady Gaga (Ally). Elevating the familiar beats of the story with soul, passion, humor, tragedy, and one hell of a soundtrack, this is a film that’ll sweep you away... it’s Hollywood filmmaking at its finest.
At the start we see Jackson on stage playing raucous country-rock for a sold-out crowd. Ducking into his limo after the gig, he lowers his head and reaches for a bottle of gin. He likes his booze — pills are okay too. He spots a bar, which turns out to be in the middle of its weekly drag night and settles in. And then he sees and hears her.
The voice comes early, courtesy of an ethereal shot of her silhouette belting out Edith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose,” and it’s on.
“La Vie En Rose” is the song that got Gaga the part. Cooper saw her sing it at a private cancer benefit and, he told Variety, “I was floored.” He went to her house, they ate leftover pasta, they sat around her piano harmonizing to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Midnight Special” and he knew: “There was no movie without her.” Awww sweet.
Believe the hype. Believe the reviews. Believe in the power of this American myth. A STAR IS BORN is the real thing.
